Calling all walkers and weekend wanderers. If you are looking for a gentle spring hike on the Costa Blanca, Sella might be exactly what you need.

May is one of the best months for hiking in Alicante province. Temperatures stay mild, and the countryside remains green from spring rain. Longer days also make inland routes ideal before summer heat takes over.

A family-friendly walk through water and history

One of the most popular routes is the Ruta del Agua de Sella. This circular trail blends nature, local history and mountain scenery. It does not require a high fitness level.

The route is officially known as SL-CV 112. It lies in the Marina Baixa, at the foot of the Sierra de Aitana. The starting point sits about 40 kilometres from Alicante city.

Most walkers begin in Sella’s Plaza Mayor or near the public parking areas by the cemetery. The route covers around 6 to 8 kilometres. It usually takes between two and three hours at a relaxed pace.

What makes the route special?

The “Water Route” follows historic waterways that shaped village life for centuries.

Along the way, walkers pass irrigation channels, old mills, reservoirs and traditional water systems used for local farming. Small bridges and shaded paths also appear throughout the route.

Spring is the best time to visit. The river sections include wooden walkways, green vegetation and small pools. Some stretches even feature waterfalls.

Key highlights include Font de l’Alcàntera, Font Major, Azud del Salt, Pont Vell and the old Molí de Baix mill.

Bridging the Gap’s top tips

The route is easy, but proper footwear still helps, especially after rain. Some sections can become slippery.

After the hike, Sella is worth exploring. The village has narrow streets, whitewashed houses and a quiet traditional feel.

You will also find bars, restaurants and picnic spots. If you still have energy left, you can climb to the ruins of the 12th-century castle. The views stretch across the valley and surrounding mountains.
