Elche is getting ready for one of its biggest nights of the sporting calendar. Thousands of runners are set to take over the streets for the city’s popular night race on Friday 15 May.
More than 6,000 participants are expected to take part this year. Organisers aim to break previous records during Elche’s year as Mediterranean Sports Capital.
A night race that keeps growing
Sports councillor José Antonio Román said organisers want the event to become “a magical night for sport in Elche”. He has encouraged residents to come out and support the runners.
He described the race as one of the city’s standout sporting events and a growing reference point on the Valencian sporting calendar.
The event continues to attract strong female participation. This now represents 45% of all runners.
Of the total participants, around 2,000 runners will compete in the 5K race. Another 4,100 will take part in the 10K event.
The race will also feature several elite athletes and the winner of last year’s event.
Every runner who crosses the finish line will receive a commemorative medal featuring the Plaza de Baix and Elche Town Hall.
Runner’s fair and special event for seniors
The traditional runner’s fair will take place on Friday afternoon and again on race day at the Candalix Civic Centre, known locally as El Bailongo.
Because of the event, the usual Saturday dance session for older residents will move to the Tiro de Pichón venue, where a special evening with catering and music has been organised instead.
The dance will run from 18:30 to 21:30. Anyone wishing to attend can register by calling 669 762 884 between 09:00 and 14:00.
Free parking will be available for those travelling by car, while public transport users can reach the venue using the R5 bus route to the surrounding districts.
