As cigarette prices go up on the Costa Blanca, smokers in Spain might want to glance at the price board before picking up their next packet.
A new update published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) has introduced revised tobacco prices across the country. The changes affect cigarettes, cigars, rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco.
The update, published by Spain’s Tobacco Market Commissioner, covers 43 products from brands such as Davidoff, Clubmaster, Panter and La Aurora.
Prices move further into premium territory
Some well-known brands now sit firmly in higher price ranges. Signature and Clubmaster cigarette packs now cost between €5 and €6.
Premium cigars have also climbed. The Davidoff Escurio Robusto now reaches €16.20 per cigar. Rolling tobacco has not been spared either. Bravo Fine Cut (250g) now sells for €45.90.
Why prices keep rising
The BOE updates do not always mean price increases, but the long-term trend is clear. Tobacco in Spain keeps getting more expensive.
Manufacturers and importers set prices freely. However, every change must be officially published before it takes effect.
Taxes remain the biggest factor. Tobacco is heavily taxed in Spain. VAT and excise duties account for around 80% of the final price.
Health organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) support high tobacco taxes. They see them as a tool to reduce smoking, especially among younger people.
From pocket change to premium cost
The rise over time has been steep.
In 1990, a packet cost around €0.65. By the early 2000s, it reached about €2.50. In 2015, it averaged €4.45.
Now in 2026, many brands sit between €5 and €7 per packet. What was once loose change has become a noticeably more expensive habit.
