Alicante-Elche Airport is not just getting busier. It is also becoming one of Europe’s most efficient airports.
The Costa Blanca gateway handled almost 20 million passengers last year, setting a new all-time record. Despite the growing crowds and packed flight schedules, the airport has actually improved its punctuality and ground operations, according to the latest Eurocontrol data.
One of Europe’s busiest airports
The airport in El Altet now ranks among the 50 busiest airports in Europe for daily aircraft traffic, handling an average of 172 departures every day.
Yet the increase in passengers and flights has not slowed operations down. Quite the opposite.
Almost seven out of ten flights now depart within Eurocontrol’s punctuality window of 15 minutes, an improvement on previous record-breaking years and a strong result at a time when many European airports continue to struggle with delays and airspace congestion.
Around 32% of flights departing Alicante-Elche left within just four minutes of their scheduled time.
Efficiency at Alicante-Elche Airport
Where Alicante-Elche really stands out is on the ground.
The airport has become one of Europe’s most efficient terminals for aircraft turnaround operations, including loading, unloading and preparing planes for departure.
According to Eurocontrol, ground delays at Alicante-Elche fell to just three minutes on average, placing it ahead of major airports such as Madrid, Barcelona, Palma, Lisbon, Amsterdam and London Gatwick.
The airport now performs at a similar operational level to highly efficient hubs such as Berlin and Bergamo.
Summer still brings delays
Like most European airports, Alicante-Elche still faces pressure during the busy summer season.
Air traffic control shortages across Europe, overcrowded airspace and delays at larger international hubs continue to create knock-on disruption during peak travel months.
During summer, the percentage of flights leaving on time drops below 60%, although that still represents an improvement on previous years.
More severe delays have also fallen slightly. Flights delayed between 15 and 60 minutes now account for around a quarter of departures, while delays of more than an hour have dropped to 6.7% of operations.
Early arrivals boost performance
Arrival punctuality at Alicante-Elche is even stronger.
Eurocontrol data shows that around a quarter of incoming flights landed between five and 15 minutes early, while 13% arrived between 15 and 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
That figure has improved by more than four percentage points compared with two years ago.
For passengers travelling through Alicante-Elche, it means that even as the airport grows bigger than ever, it is also getting faster and more efficient behind the scenes.
