Shoes, shoes, shoes: Calling all Costa Blanca shoe lovers. The José María Amat Amer Footwear Museum in Elda is a place that shows how important the shoe industry has been to the town over the years.
The museum has earned a strong reputation both in Spain and abroad, not just for its displays but also for its role in keeping Elda’s shoemaking tradition alive.
Elda Shoe Museum has the best shoe collection in the world
The museum protects and shares the history of shoe production in Elda, which is a key part of the town’s identity. It also celebrates the skill and hard work of local shoemakers and stitchers.
Inside, the museum covers 2,000 square metres and includes what many consider the best shoe collection in the world. Visitors can see how footwear has changed over time, with displays of tools, machines, and shoes dating back to the 14th century. Some are rare or decorative pieces, made to stand out.
Opening times
One of the most popular parts of the museum is the “Shoes with History” section. It includes footwear worn by well-known people from the world of sport, music, and culture, like Rafa Nadal and Lola Flores. Every year, the museum also gives out the “Best Footwear in Spain” award to a well-known woman who helps promote the image of Spanish footwear for a whole year.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 until 14:00 and from 17:00 until 20:00. On Sundays and public holidays, it’s open from 10:00 until 14:00. You can book a guided tour in Spanish or English if you arrange it in advance.
