Just north of Alicante, in the small town of Onil, you will find Casa Tápena.

It is a quiet park that’s home to one of the biggest plant mazes in Spain. It’s a great place to wander and walk through the lovely gardens.

The maze is part of a larger park. There is also an adventure playground, picnic areas, and walking paths. Across the road, there’s a pine forest which is perfect for a shaded summer walk. Dogs aren’t allowed in the maze itself, but they are welcome in the nearby recreation area by the Ermita de Santa Ana.

There is also a fun story linked to the maze. Local legend says if you reach the centre, close your eyes and touch the cedar tree, make a wish, then find your way out without cheating, your wish might come true.

Entry is free. The maze is located at Partida de, Carrer de Favanella, s/n, 03430 Onil, Alicante.

Summer hours: Monday to Friday from 09:00 till 14:00, weekends and holidays from 09:00 till 20:00.

Winter hours: Monday to Friday from 09:00 till 14:00, weekends and holidays from 09:00 till 18:00.

The times change when the clocks change in Spain. After some recent work, the maze reopened on 15 August 2024. You now enter through a new side gate that makes easier for everyone to use.

The maze first opened in 2002 and was inspired by the old Greek story of Daedalus and the Minotaur.

If you are in the area, you can also visit another small maze in the nearby town of Penáguila. Like Casa Tápena, it’s free but opening hours may vary with the seasons.
