If you are looking for a unique day out away from the coast, Petrer is offering visitors the chance to explore parts of one of its most historic buildings that are normally closed to the public: the hidden church.

Guided tours of the towers of Iglesia de San Bartolomé, is giving visitors access to hidden areas rarely seen by the public.

Hidden parts of the church

The tour takes visitors through several fascinating areas of the church.

Participants can see the bells that traditionally marked the hours and called residents to worship. They can also view historic graffiti left behind by former altar boys and bell ringers.

In addition, visitors can learn how the town clock works and explore the church choir area.

Together, these features offer a glimpse into centuries of local history that many residents have never seen.

Spectacular views

One of the highlights of the visit is the climb to the bell towers.

From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across Petrer’s old town and surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the views stretch well beyond the historic centre.

Meanwhile, guides explain the history of the building and the role the towers played in everyday life.

As a result, the visit combines history, architecture and photography in one experience.

Personal experience

The tour lasts approximately two and a half hours and starts at the main entrance of Iglesia de San Bartolomé.

The next visit takes place on Saturday 13 June between 10:00 and 12:30.

However, places are limited. This is because some of the areas included in the tour can only accommodate small groups.

That’s why advance booking is essential.

Dates throughout 2026

If you cannot make the June tour, there are several other opportunities to take part.

Additional visits have been scheduled for:

  • 18 July
  • 8 August
  • 26 September

As well as offering something different for visitors, the tours help showcase Petrer’s rich heritage.
