A major boost for Alicante’s film industry could be on the horizon after production company Good Films Studios announced plans to shoot up to 20 films at Ciudad de la Luz over the next ten years.
The company, founded by British producer Miriam Segal in 2007, has made Alicante’s famous film studios a key part of its long-term strategy and intends to base several major productions there in the coming years.
Five productions already in development
Good Films Studios revealed that it currently has five films in pre-production, alongside a new feature film that has already started filming in Alicante.
The company says its projects typically carry budgets of between €18 million and €24 million, creating jobs and generating economic activity in the local area.
Alicante film industry
The company expects filming to continue at a steady pace over the next few years.
According to Good Films Studios CEO Juan Carlos Gonzálvez, production is due to begin on “American Paradise” and “The Man Who Stole the Sky” later this year.
The latter project could reportedly feature Spanish actress Penélope Cruz.
Three additional productions are already scheduled for 2027, with further projects planned throughout the next decade.
Ciudad de la Luz aims for a leading role in Europe
Gonzálvez described Ciudad de la Luz as one of the most promising film studio complexes in Europe.
He highlighted Alicante’s climate, infrastructure and variety of filming locations as major advantages for attracting international productions.
He also praised the facilities themselves, describing the studios as a key asset for the future of the European film industry.
Challenges still remain
Despite the ambitious plans, the company says there is still work to do if Alicante wants to establish itself as a complete film production hub.
Gonzálvez pointed to the need for more young talent and a stronger network of specialist suppliers.
Currently, Good Films Studios carries out much of its post-production work in the United Kingdom.
However, the company hopes to complete the entire production process in the Valencian Community in the future, keeping more investment and jobs within the region.
Economic impact continues to grow
Ciudad de la Luz has become an increasingly important part of Alicante’s economy since reopening to international productions.
Over the past four years, the complex has generated more than €67 million in economic impact.
During that period, it has hosted 15 major international productions, generated more than 30,000 overnight stays and worked with over 400 local companies.
With 20 new films now planned over the coming decade, the studios look set to play an even bigger role in Alicante’s growing reputation as an international filming destination.
