El Palmeral Park in Alicante is one of the city’s most distinctive outdoor spaces.
The park is a tropical pocket of calm that feels far from the city, even though it is just a short ride from the centre.
With its sea views, tall palms, and shaded paths, the park is a perfect place for wandering, relaxing, and letting time slow down a little.
El Palmeral Park: Palm grove beginnings
The park began as part of an old palm grove, once similar to those in Elche and Orihuela. It was originally the estate of Mariano Roca de Togores and later of Juan José Soler, a friend of painter Joaquín Sorolla, who was inspired to paint his famous El Palmeral here.
The Council bought the land in 1944, but it wasn’t turned into the park we know today until 1997, when it opened to the public.
Today, El Palmeral is home to around 7,000 palm trees, including date palms that can reach up to 20 metres high. Wooden bridges, ponds, and winding paths make it perfect for an afternoon stroll.
A family favourite
El Palmeral in Alicante is a great place for families. The pump track is a favourite, it is a circuit for bikes, skateboards, roller skates, and scooters. There are also children’s play areas and plenty of space to run around.
Down by the water, the small pier which has been recently renovated, offers boat rides. Nearby, the bandstand becomes a cultural hub in summer, hosting open-air theatre, concerts, and puppet shows.
You will find El Palmeral Park on Avenida de Elche 109. It is easy to reach by bus as lines 01, 27, and C6 stop nearby.
If you fancy a walk, a family outing, or you just want to sit under the palm trees with an ice cream, this green corner of Alicante never disappoints.
