Spain’s latest speed control campaign shows that speeding is still very much an issue on the roads.

The operation, carried out by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) between 13 and 19 April, checked the speed of more than 1.25 million vehicles across the country.

Out of those, just over 78,000 drivers were caught going over the limit. That’s around 6.2%, which is more or less in line with previous campaigns.

Most of the offences happened on faster roads. Motorways and dual carriageways accounted for over half of all fines, while a large share also came from conventional roads. Only a small number were recorded in urban areas.

There were also some more serious cases. Fifteen drivers were reported to the courts for extreme speeding, meaning they were more than 80 km/h over the limit. That kind of offence can lead to criminal charges, not just a fine.

Compared to the last campaign in August 2025, more vehicles were checked this time, which partly explains the higher numbers overall.
