Spain, through the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), has launched a nationwide accident helpline: 018.
There are moments after a road accident when everything feels a bit unclear. Not just the paperwork or the practical steps, but the emotional side too.
Spain has just introduced a new service designed to help in exactly those situations.
A number to call when the dust settles
This is not an emergency number. It is there for what comes after.
Whether you have been directly involved in an accident, or you are supporting a family member or friend, 018 offers a place to ask questions, get guidance and, importantly, speak to someone who understands what you are dealing with in your native language.
The service is free, confidential and available every day of the year from 8:00 to 21:00.
What kind of help does it offer?
Think of it as a first port of call when you are not quite sure what to do next.
On the other end of the line is a team made up of psychologists, social workers and legal professionals, all with experience in traffic-related cases. They can help with things like:
- Understanding what steps to take after an accident
- Basic legal guidance around reports, claims or compensation
- Emotional support, especially in the early stages after a shock
- Advice on where to find further help or specialist services
If needed, they can also point you towards local support groups or associations.
More than just a phone call
The idea behind 018 is to make support easier to access. Not everyone knows where to turn after an accident, especially in a country that may not be their own.
For expats in particular, having a service that works in over 50 languages can make a real difference.
You can also get in touch in different ways:
- By calling 018
- Via WhatsApp on 645 713 823
- By email or through the DGT website
A bit of ongoing support too
In more serious cases, the service does not just end with one call.
If you agree to it, the team can check in over time, for up to a year, to make sure you are getting the help you need as things evolve.
