Later this year, Spain is implementing a new bottle deposit scheme. If you do your weekly shop in Costa Blanca, this is worth knowing about.

From November 2026, buying a drink in Spain will come with a small twist. Containers such as plastic bottles and cans will include a refundable deposit, as part of a new nationwide recycling system.

At first glance, it may look like prices have increased. However, that extra cost, expected to be at least €0.10 per item, is not a price rise. Instead, it is a deposit that you will get back when you return the empty container.

How it will work

The system, known as SDDR (Deposit, Return and Refund System), is designed to be simple and practical.

When you buy a drink, whether it is water, a soft drink, beer or juice, you will pay a small deposit on the container. Then, once you have finished it, you can return the empty bottle, can or carton to a participating shop or machine and reclaim your money.

In most cases, the system will apply to everyday containers of up to three litres.

Why it is being introduced

Spain failed to meet its recycling targets in 2023, particularly for drinks containers.

As a result, authorities are introducing a system already used in several European countries, where return rates are significantly higher. The goal is clear: encourage more people to recycle and reduce the amount of waste, especially plastic, that ends up in landfill or the sea.

What it means day to day

For most people, this will simply mean adopting a new habit.

Instead of throwing bottles and cans straight into recycling bins, you will need to keep them and return them during your next shop. In return, you recover your deposit.

It is a small change. Over time, though, it could have a big impact on recycling rates and help cut down litter in streets, parks and coastal areas.

More details on exactly how and where to return containers are expected closer to the launch.
