While much of Europe shuffles forward at a snail’s pace, Spain is powering ahead as the EU’s fastest-growing economy.
Since early 2024, the country has been clocking growth of about 3% a year, which is more than double the Eurozone average. Rating agencies like S&P have taken note, and the Bank of Spain has lifted its 2025 forecast to 2.6%.
That makes Spain the fastest-growing major economy in the EU.
What’s driving the EU’s fastest-growing economy
Several things are pushing Spain ahead of the pack:
- Tourism: back in full swing after the pandemic.
- EU funds: Spain is the second-biggest recipient, and the cash is being pumped into infrastructure and modernisation.
- Green energy: renewables are luring foreign investors.
- Labour reforms: changes made in 2021 have made jobs more secure.
- The real game changer: Immigration.
Unlike many of its neighbours, Spain has opened its doors. Around 600,000 people a year have settled since 2022, most of them of working age. That has helped fill jobs, push employment to record highs, and fuel spending.
A Latin American link
Most newcomers arrive from Latin America, and about 70% of the population increased in 2023. Shared language and culture have smoothed the process, while government policies have made legal routes easier and even given undocumented workers new options.
The flip side
The good news comes with caveats to the EU’s fastest-growing economy. GDP per person has only crept up by about 3% since 2019, because many migrants are working in low-productivity areas like hospitality and construction.
Groups like the IMF say Spain needs to:
- Cut red tape for businesses.
- Offer tax breaks and long-term finance, especially for small firms.
- Invest in training so industries like IT, finance, and engineering can thrive.
The bottom line
Spain has shown how immigration can boost an economy when handled well. The big question now is whether it can turn this demographic tailwind into lasting prosperity, not just growth on paper, but a better standard of living for everyone.
