The Costa Blanca is leading the Valencian Community in the push for healthier beaches, with 27 municipalities now taking part in the Playa sin Humo (Smoke-Free Beach) programme.
The initiative aims to reduce exposure to tobacco smoke while helping protect the coastal environment.
Of the 45 municipalities currently signed up across the region, more than half are located on the Costa Blanca.
Costa Blanca dominates the programme
The latest municipality to join the scheme is Villajoyosa.
Officials recently raised the Playa sin Humo (Smoke-Free Beach) flag at Playa Paradís to mark the town’s inclusion in the network.
The programme now includes:
- 27 municipalities in Alicante Province
- 10 municipalities in Castellón Province
- 8 municipalities in Valencia Province
The growing number of participating towns highlights the increasing focus on creating healthier public spaces along the Valencian coastline.

Can you still smoke on a smoke-free beach?
Not always.
The Playa sin Humo (Smoke-Free Beach) programme mainly focuses on education and awareness. However, some councils have introduced local regulations that ban smoking completely and can issue fines.
For example, municipalities such as Calp and Finestrat can impose penalties of up to €750 for breaking local no-smoking rules.
Visitors should always check beach signage before lighting a cigarette, as rules vary between municipalities.
