TRAM d'Alacant at a stop.
All aboard: TRAM line 9 gets the green light in Gata de Gorgos. TRAM d'Alacant.

A significant change could soon reshape the TRAM network in Gata de Gorgos after the Valencian government approved plans to convert part of Line 9 into an urban tram route.

The decision officially reclassifies the section of track that passes through the town as a tramway rather than a conventional railway line.

Local officials believe the change will improve safety and make it easier for trains, vehicles and pedestrians to share the urban environment.

What does the TRAM conversion mean?

The approval affects the section of Line 9 TRAM that runs through Gata de Gorgos.

By reclassifying the route as an urban tram section, authorities can adapt the infrastructure to better fit the town’s streets and public spaces.

The project began after the Ayuntamiento de Gata de Gorgos submitted a request in 2024.

The Directorate General for Land Transport Infrastructure of the Generalitat Valenciana signed the resolution on 28 May 2026.

Safety approval secured

The project has already secured support from the Valencian Railway Safety Agency.

That endorsement marked an important milestone and allowed the proposal to move forward.

However, authorities have not yet granted final approval.

Before they can give the project the final green light, contractors must complete several safety improvements.

Roads set for upgrades

Authorities have linked the approval to a series of works at several locations around the town.

The upgrades aim to improve safety for pedestrians, road users and the TRAM service.

The affected areas include:

  • Calle Montgó
  • Calle Paet
  • Camino de la Ermita del Calvario
  • Carretera de Jávea
  • Calle Jesús Pobre

Once contractors complete these improvements, authorities can move the project towards final approval.

Better integration with the town

The long-term goal is to create a better balance between public transport and daily life in Gata de Gorgos.

Urban tram systems typically operate at lower speeds through built-up areas and integrate more naturally into town centres.

As a result, local authorities hope the changes will improve accessibility while maintaining safety for residents and visitors.

Step forward for Line 9

Line 9 connects Benidorm and Dénia and has undergone extensive modernisation in recent years.

The tram conversion marks another step in the ongoing effort to modernise the route while improving how it interacts with the communities it serves.
