Since the 1960s, the Costa Blanca has grown into one of Spain’s leading areas for residential tourism.

Over the years, it has become a firm favourite with foreign residents. That long history is now one of the main reasons more people continue to choose the area as their new home.

Foreign residents do not decide on location alone. Cost of living, access to healthcare, and the climate all play a major role, especially for those planning retirement. These factors have been analysed by the consultancy Moving to Spain, which has published a list of the best places to retire in Spain for 2025. The study ranks 38 popular destinations.

The ranking is based on thirteen different measures. These combine the real experiences of foreign residents with practical data. Factors include climate, level of English spoken, percentage of residents over 65, availability of care facilities, kilometres of beach, crime rates, average rental prices, size of the expat community, life satisfaction, wealth tax rates, interest from future residents, healthcare quality, and overall economic stability.

Costa Blanca residential tourism: Top spot

According to the study, Calpe takes first place as the best retirement destination in Spain for 2025. Its strong result comes mainly from social and demographic factors. Calpe has the highest percentage of foreign residents in the ranking, at 56.4%. This creates a strong sense of community and services that are well suited to international residents. Healthcare provision and a good level of English also score highly.

The Marina Alta appears again near the top of the list. Jávea shares second place with Almuñécar and Benidorm. It is praised for its surroundings, outdoor lifestyle, and leisure options. Jávea also ranks highly for the number of beaches per kilometre, coming just behind Marbella and Alicante city. Its location between the sea and the Montgó natural park is another clear attraction.

Dénia also makes the list, although slightly lower down. It comes in eighth place, thanks to factors linked to quality of life. Life satisfaction scores well, and like Jávea, Dénia is valued for its beaches and coastal setting.
