Altea will once again show its community spirit later this month with a charity walk supporting research into Tatton-Brown-Rahman Syndrome, an ultra-rare condition that affects just 30 known people in Spain.

The solidarity event takes place on Sunday 31 May along Altea’s seafront promenade.

Accessible 5km coastal walk

The event begins at 09:00 on Paseo Mediterráneo, opposite Restaurante Caliu.

Participants can register, enjoy music and collect information before the walk starts at 10:00.

The 5km route follows Altea’s seafront promenade and remains fully accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

Families with young children can stay in the Paseig Sant Pere park area if they prefer not to complete the full route.

Raising awareness for a little-known condition

Changes to the DNMT3A gene cause Tatton-Brown-Rahman Syndrome. The condition can affect physical development, speech, learning and psychomotor skills.

Symptoms vary from person to person and doctors still have no cure.

One child living in Altea has the condition. The diagnosis has helped raise local awareness about the need for more research funding.

Organiser and psychologist María Lloret explained that many families lead fundraising campaigns themselves because ultra-rare diseases receive limited scientific support.

Vall d’Hebron Hospital also supports the project and continues researching the syndrome.
