British pub chain Wetherspoon will open two new pubs in Spain after the success of its first mainland European location at Alicante-Elche Airport.
The company has confirmed it will launch new venues at Barcelona–El Prat Airport over the next two years.
Wetherspoon in Spain: Pubs planned for Barcelona Airport
The first pub will open in Terminal 1 in September 2026.
A second venue will follow in Terminal 2 in January 2027.
Both pubs will operate inside the airport’s airside area, meaning passengers must pass through security before entering.
Wetherspoon says the two venues will have space for almost 600 customers combined.
Alicante Airport pub helped drive expansion
The expansion follows the launch of Castell de Santa Bàrbera at Alicante-Elche Airport earlier this year.
The pub quickly attracted attention from British tourists visiting the Costa Blanca.
Customers can buy traditional British meals including fish and chips and full English breakfasts. The menu also includes Spanish dishes such as tortilla española and gambas al ajillo.
Alicante-Elche Airport became the company’s first mainland European location because of the large number of British visitors travelling to destinations including Benidorm, Altea and Torrevieja.
Wetherspoon targets busy European airports
The company says the Barcelona expansion forms part of a wider strategy focused on busy holiday airports across Europe.
The move also highlights growing competition between international food chains and local airport operators.
British bakery chain Greggs recently opened its first overseas branch in Spain at Tenerife South Airport.
