There has been plenty of chatter about it, and now it is official! Wetherspoons has arrived in Alicante.

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has expanded its food and drink options with the opening of an pub from the well-known British chain, Wetherspoon.

The launch marks a milestone for the brand. This venue is Wetherspoon’s first opening in Spain and its first anywhere outside the UK and Ireland.

Passengers will find the pub in the departures area for international non-Schengen flights, the part of the terminal most frequently used by British travellers. Senior figures from Lagardère Travel Retail, Wetherspoon and Aena marked the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The menu features all the familiar favourites, including full English breakfasts, burgers, pizzas and pub classics. This is alongside draught beer, craft beers, wine and other drinks. The kitchen also nods to local tastes with dishes such as tortilla de patatas and garlic prawns.

The venue covers more than 200 square metres and includes a covered outdoor terrace of over 30 square metres. This allows passengers to sit outside without leaving the secure departures area.

Wetherspoon has also given the pub a local name, Castell de Santa Bàrbara, in tribute to one of Alicante’s best-known landmarks.
