Villajoyosa is hosting an unusual free event that blends yoga with a touch of ancient astronomy at the Iberian-Roman sanctuary of La Malladeta.

On Monday, 22 September, you can watch the sunrise while learning about the fascinating history of the site.

The morning kicks off with a yoga session (it’s a standing yoga session – so no need to worry about bringing a mat). After stretching and waking up with the sun, attendees can take part in an archaeoastronomical observation and discover how the sanctuary was used during Iberian and Roman times.

The group will meet at 7:10 at La Malladeta, right next to Dr José María Esquerdo’s studio tower.

For the ancient Iberians, the sanctuary marked the halfway point between the two solstices, what we now call the equinoxes. From its high perch on La Malladeta, they could track the sun’s path and plan their agricultural year.

Later, the Romans likely moved worship to a temple in the forum of Allon, the Roman city nearby.
