Thousands of passengers across Alicante could face travel disruption next month after TRAM drivers announced a fresh round of strike action.
The dispute between drivers’ union SEMAF and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) remains unresolved after the latest mediation talks ended without an agreement. As a result, passengers can expect reduced services during several days in June.
Strike dates confirmed
SEMAF has announced strike action on the following dates:
- 2 June
- 4 June
- 9 June
- 11 June
- 16 June
The strikes on 2 and 4 June coincide with the start and end of the PAU (University Entrance Exams), when thousands of students travel to Alicante university.
Peak travel hours affected
Drivers plan to stop work during three periods on each strike day:
- 07:00 to 10:00
- 13:00 to 16:00
- 19:00 to 21:00
These periods cover some of the busiest times on the network. Passengers should expect delays, cancellations and busier-than-normal trams across Alicante.
Anyone planning to travel during these hours should check service updates before leaving and allow extra time for their journey.
Why drivers are striking
SEMAF says the dispute centres on working conditions, staffing levels and operational safety.
The union claims FGV has failed to address concerns raised by drivers and has not offered enough improvements in negotiations over a new collective agreement.
Union representatives are seeking better professional recognition, stronger safety measures and working conditions that match current European railway standards.
FGV believes its proposals are sufficient, leaving both sides still far apart.
Could disruption continue into summer?
The union has warned that further strike action remains possible if negotiations do not progress.
That could create additional problems during the busy summer season when both residents and tourists rely heavily on the TRAM network to travel around Alicante and the Costa Blanca.
