This is said to be a procession of lost souls, dressed in hooded cloaks, who roam the countryside at night. People believe that seeing the Santa Compaña is a sign of death coming soon.
This legend has been passed down for centuries. If you ever meet the Santa Compaña during your walk, there are traditional ways to protect yourself. For example, you can draw a circle with salt around you, or hold onto one of the many stone crosses you will find along the Camino.
