The Camino de Santiago is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world.
It runs through northern Spain and ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Many people say it’s a journey you should make at least once in your life.
Camino de Santiago: the procession of lost souls
When you reach Galicia, you enter a land full of old stories and legends. One of the most famous, and eerie, is the tale of the Santa Compaña. This is said to be a procession of lost souls, dressed in hooded cloaks, who roam the countryside at night. People believe that seeing the Santa Compaña is a sign of death coming soon.
This legend has been passed down for centuries. If you ever meet the Santa Compaña during your walk, there are traditional ways to protect yourself. For example, you can draw a circle with salt around you, or hold onto one of the many stone crosses you will find along the Camino.
