Orihuela is inviting residents and visitors to discover its museums in a completely different way this summer, with a programme of evening activities combining history, music, astronomy, local wine and family-friendly entertainment.

So, do you fancy spending the night in a museum?

The initiative offers a fresh perspective on some of the city’s most important heritage sites while helping visitors escape the daytime heat during the summer months.

Museums after dark

The programme begins on 26 June with Perito en lunas at the Miguel Hernández House Museum. Inspired by the poet’s work, the event explores his fascination with the moon.

Throughout the evening, participants can enjoy creative workshops, an astronomical observation session and a screening of Georges Méliès’ classic silent film A Trip to the Moon.

In addition, a small group of children aged between 10 and 12 will have the opportunity to spend the night at the museum as part of a unique sleepover experience. However, places are limited and advance booking is required.

Meanwhile, visitors can also take part in a guided night tour of the Museum of the Reconquest and the City Wall. The tour offers a different perspective on Orihuela’s medieval past after sunset.

Wine, music and heritage

The programme then continues on 31 July and 28 August with two evenings dedicated to local culture, gastronomy and live music.

On both dates, visitors will be able to sample wines produced in the Orihuela area, take part in children’s craft workshops and enjoy acoustic performances in historic surroundings.

The July event concludes with a concert in the cloister of the Santo Domingo Diocesan College. Meanwhile, organisers will host the August gathering at the Miguel Hernández House Museum.

History through play

Finally, the programme concludes on 11 September with a family-focused activity at the Museum of the City Wall.

During the event, children will discover Orihuela’s history through a night-time gymkhana designed to combine learning with entertainment.

From stargazing at the Miguel Hernández House Museum to exploring ancient city walls after dark, the programme offers visitors a memorable way to experience some of Orihuela’s most treasured landmarks.
