If a stroll through a nature reserve followed by a wine tasting sounds like your kind of afternoon, then you are in luck.

The guided tour of La Mata Vineyard is the perfect excuse to treat yourself.

Set in the Natural Park of La Laguna de la Mata near Torrevieja, you will explore sandy trails. In addition, stroll past reed-lined ravines, and spot local wildlife like hares, foxes, and flamingos.  In winter, you may even be lucky enough to see the odd wild boar.

Rare bird sightings make La Mata Vineyard extra special

The adventure begins at the park’s Interpretation Centre, where you will set off on a walk through the vineyards. Along the way, your guide will fill you in on what makes this landscape so special, from the rare birds hiding in the reeds to the centuries-old irrigation canal that still brings Mediterranean water to the lagoon.

There’s also a rather fascinating story about how these very vineyards helped revive a nearly extinct grape variety across Spain.

A relaxed wine tasting awaits

But don’t worry, it’s not all walking and facts. After you’ve taken in the scenery, you’ll be led to a hidden gem in the pine forest.

You can enjoy a relaxed wine tasting featuring local wines from La Mata and the Alicante region, paired with proper local nibbles, handmade appetisers, cheeses, and even a splash of extra virgin olive oil straight from the area.

The tour lasts around three hours and can be booked from 11:00 to 14:00 in winter and from 18:00 to 21:00 in summer.

The tour can be booked through the website.
