The project centres on a 28,000-square-metre site that could eventually become one of the largest cricket venues in southern Europe.
While supporters see it as an opportunity to diversify local sports facilities and attract international visitors, critics have questioned whether the development reflects the priorities of the wider community.
A sport with growing local roots
Although cricket remains a niche sport in Spain compared with football, tennis or padel, its popularity has steadily increased in areas with significant international populations.
The Costa Blanca already hosts several cricket clubs, particularly among British, South Asian and Commonwealth expatriate communities, and local participation has gradually expanded over the past decade.
