Celebrate Father’s Day in Spain. Every year on 19 March, families celebrate, it is a day dedicated to thanking dads, grandads and father figures for everything they do.

The date is not random. In Spain, Father’s Day coincides with the feast day of Saint Joseph, who in Christian tradition is known as the foster father of Jesus Christ. Because of this religious connection, Spain marks the occasion on 19 March, unlike many other countries.

The day can feel especially lively in places such as Murcia and the Costa Blanca, where the date often overlaps with the climax of the famous Fallas Festival celebrations. During these festivities, communities burn enormous papier-mâché figures known as ninots in spectacular displays.

How Father’s Day started in Spain

The modern Spanish celebration of Father’s Day began relatively recently.

Many historians credit the idea to Manuela Vicente Ferrero, a schoolteacher in Madrid. In 1948 she heard complaints from several fathers who wondered why children celebrated Mother’s Day with gifts but had no similar occasion for dads.

Inspired by these conversations, she suggested celebrating Father’s Day on 19 March and linking it to the feast day of Saint Joseph. She later published the idea in the education journal El Magisterio Español and encouraged other schools to join the initiative.

Soon afterwards, schools across Spain organised small classroom celebrations where children prepared cards and handmade gifts for their fathers. Over time the tradition spread nationwide and gradually evolved into the Father’s Day celebration recognised today.

Why other countries celebrate on different dates

Spain is not the only country that celebrates Father’s Day in March. Countries such as Italy, Portugal and parts of Latin America also mark the day on 19 March, reflecting the same Catholic connection to Saint Joseph.

However, many other countries follow a different tradition.

In places such as the United States, the United Kingdom and several Latin American nations, families celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. Meanwhile, some Scandinavian countries hold their celebrations in November.
