Are you planning on flying this summer? Due to the ongoing events, travellers are asking lots of questions. Will flights be cancelled? Will flights cost more? Find out what’s happening at Alicante Airport.
Will flights get more expensive?
Fuel costs are the main issue. The price of aviation fuel has doubled, rising from around $700 to as much as $1,500 per tonne.
Airlines have already covered much of their summer fuel costs in advance, which helps keep things stable for now. But looking ahead, prices could go either way depending on how airlines handle those rising costs.
In simple terms, fares might go up, but it is not a given.
No fuel shortages expected
One concern that has been ruled out is supply.
Spain refines most of the fuel it uses, around 80% to 85%, so there are no signs of shortages that would lead to cancellations or major disruption.
Flights are expected to run as normal.
Is it worth booking early?
If you already have dates in mind, it may be worth booking sooner rather than later.
With demand high and fuel prices uncertain, leaving it too late could mean paying more than you need to.
Airlines are gearing up for a busy season, with more flights, more seats and plenty of options if you are looking to get away.
More flights from Alicante
Across Spain, airlines are increasing capacity by around 5.7% this summer. But here on the Costa Blanca, the growth is even stronger.
At Alicante-Elche Airport, the number of available seats is set to rise by 14.1%, reaching nearly 16.9 million. That means more choice, more routes and a better chance of finding a flight that suits you.
Most of that growth is coming from European and long-haul routes, while domestic flights are slightly down.
Demand still strong
Despite ongoing global tensions, airlines are not expecting major disruption.
In fact, Spain could benefit, with some travellers choosing safer and more familiar destinations over other parts of the Mediterranean.
That said, there is a bit of a question mark over ticket prices.
The bigger picture
Airlines have scheduled close to 260 million seats across Spain this summer, showing just how strong demand remains.
For those living on the Costa Blanca, it all points to a busy airport and a wide range of travel options.
