Italy is becoming an increasingly important market for Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport as airlines continue expanding connections between the Costa Blanca and major Italian cities.
Passenger traffic between Alicante and Italy grew by 7.5% during 2025, reaching around 669,000 travellers. As a result, Italy now ranks among the airport’s top international markets, ahead of countries such as Ireland, Switzerland and Denmark.
At the same time, competition on Italian routes is intensifying. ITA Airways will launch its first-ever Alicante connection from Rome, while both Ryanair and Wizz Air are adding new flights to Venice.
Alicante to Italy: First direct flights to Sicily
One of the biggest additions for winter 2026 will be the airport’s first direct route to Sicily.
Wizz Air will launch a new connection between Alicante and Catania on 15 December 2026.
Tickets are already on sale, with fares starting from around €22.
The route will operate three times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Flights will depart Alicante at 17:55 and arrive in Catania at 20:10.
Meanwhile, the return service leaves Sicily at 14:40 and lands back on the Costa Blanca at 17:30. Flight time is expected to be around two and a half hours.
Wizz Air keeps growing in Alicante
The new Sicily route becomes Wizz Air’s fourth Italian destination from Alicante.
In addition, it marks the airline’s third new Italian route added this year following the launch of flights to Milan Malpensa and Venice Marco Polo.
The airline also operates flights to Rome Fiumicino, where it competes directly with Vueling, ITA Airways and Ryanair.
Beyond Italy, Wizz Air continues expanding its Eastern European network from Alicante with routes to:
- Belgrade
- Bucharest
- Cluj-Napoca
- Gdańsk
- Warsaw
- Katowice
- Budapest
- Bratislava
- London Luton
Italy’s growing role on the Costa Blanca
The expanding route network reflects rising demand between Alicante and Italy for both tourism and resident travel.
With direct connections now linking Alicante to Rome, Venice, Milan and Sicily, the airport continues strengthening its position as one of southern Europe’s busiest international hubs ahead of another record summer and winter season.
