Spain might soon be home to a rather eye-catching addition to its skyline: a towering 300-metre metal sculpture of a fighting bull.
The idea, dreamed up by the Spanish Academy of Bullfighting, is to turn it into a symbol on par with the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty, only much more bovine.
Dubbed The Bull of Spain, the structure would be built in a town that ticks all the boxes: plenty of tourists passing through, decent transport links, and a bit of spare land. In return, it is promised to bring jobs, shops, restaurants, and enough photo ops to keep Instagram pretty busy!
This oversized bull won’t cost taxpayers a single euro. The whole thing is said to be backed by private investors.
Plans include panoramic viewing platforms up on the horns, plus a full tourist complex at ground level.
Originally, Madrid was tipped as the likely host. But after a bit of political back-and-forth, the City Council politely declined. That has left the Academy back on the phone, now courting other towns both in the region and across the country.
Jorge Álvarez, head of the Academy, said: “Every tourist takes home a little bull souvenir, why not give them one they will never forget?”
