Meet the new pastor at Hope Christian Fellowship in La Marina

After more than 13 years serving La Marina Urbanisation and the surrounding area, Hope Christian Fellowship has entered a new chapter with Pastor Mary Walker taking over the leadership of the church.

Mary succeeded Pastor Bryan Lowry, who retired in March at the remarkable age of 93 after leading the church since its early days. We caught up with Pastor Mary to find out more about the church, its community work and her plans for the future.

How did you become pastor at Hope Christian Fellowship?

“I took over from Pastor Bryan Lowry when he retired in March. Bryan had faithfully led the church for more than 13 years and was instrumental in raising the funds to buy our church building, which is opposite the Thursday market in La Marina Urbanisation.”

“It’s a privilege to continue what he started.”

What sort of church is Hope Christian Fellowship?

“Our services are held in English, but we’re a very international church. People from many countries and different church backgrounds come along.”

“We have a relaxed, contemporary style of worship and there’s no dress code, so visitors and holidaymakers are always welcome.

“We meet every Sunday at 11:00 and we always stay afterwards for tea, coffee and a chat. That’s often where friendships begin.”

What are your hopes for the church?

“My heart is to see the church become even more involved in the local community. We want people to know that we’re here for everyone, whatever their background or circumstances.”

How does the church support local people?

“We work closely with A.A.N., collecting food for people who need it and supporting the charity financially.

“Our Cornerstone group meets every Thursday from 10:00 until 13:00 while the market is on. We help people complete paperwork for things such as Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance and Spain’s Dependency Law. We also help arrange medical appointments and TIE appointments where needed.

“We also keep mobility aids that local residents can borrow free of charge.”

Does the church support projects beyond the local area?

“Yes. Alongside our work with A.A.N., we support The Message Trust, which helps vulnerable people in the UK. We also hold a monthly fundraising lunch in support of prison ministry work in Ukraine.”

Are there activities for people who aren’t regular churchgoers?

“Absolutely. Every six weeks we hold WOW, our women’s gathering, with a different theme each time. Lots of women from the local community come along, whether they attend church or not.”

Tell us about your newest project.

“On September 3 we’re launching something called A Cup of Joy and a Chatter. It will run from 11:00 until 13:00 and anyone is welcome.

“The idea is simple. People can come along for a free drink and a snack, enjoy music, crafts and games, and spend time with others. We know that many people experience loneliness, so we hope this will be a place where everyone feels welcome.”
