A story of love, betrayal and redemption
Set in a village near the Rhine during the Middle Ages, Giselle tells the story of a young peasant girl who falls in love with Albrecht. She later discovers that he is a nobleman already promised to another woman. Overcome with despair, she takes her own life.
In the second act, her spirit joins the Wilis, the ghosts of young women who died before their wedding day. Myrtha leads them, and they force any man they meet to dance until he collapses. When Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave, he faces both the Wilis and his own guilt. Giselle’s love, however, protects him.
Peter Wright’s production balances two very different worlds. The first act portrays village life with realism and warmth. A moonlit forest transforms the second act as the supernatural takes control.
Leading cast and music
The role of Giselle demands exceptional technical skill and emotional range. On this occasion, principal dancer Akane Takada performs the title role alongside Matthew Ball as Albrecht and Annette Buvoli as Myrtha.
The orchestra of the Royal Opera House performs Adolphe Adam’s score, with Sergey Levitin leading as concertmaster.
The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.
