Getting around Torrevieja by bus is set to become more affordable after the council approved a cheaper bus travel structure ahead of the launch of its revamped urban transport network.
The new pricing model offers lower fares for frequent passengers, discounted travel for young people and other eligible groups, unlimited travel passes and free bus journeys for many older residents.
The council has given the proposals initial approval. They will now go out for public consultation before the new fares come into force.
Standard fares start at €1.35
A single journey on any urban bus route will cost €1.35.
Regular passengers can save money by buying multi-trip passes. A 10-trip pass costs €9, while a 20-trip pass costs €18. That reduces the cost of each journey to €0.90.
Passengers can also buy a Bono 30 pass. It offers unlimited travel for 30 consecutive days for €38.
Discounts for young people and families
The council has also introduced a reduced-price multi-trip pass for eligible groups.
People under 26, members of large families and long-term unemployed residents can pay just €0.65 per journey, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.
Free travel for many over-65s
One of the biggest changes is the new Gold Pass. It allows eligible residents to travel free throughout the year.
Residents aged over 65 can apply if they have been registered on Torrevieja’s municipal census for at least 12 months. Pensioners and residents with a recognised disability of 33% or more must also meet the same residency requirement.
New tourist travel card
Visitors will also have access to a new tourist pass designed for short stays.
The pass offers unlimited travel for three days at €8 or seven days at €16. It gives holidaymakers an affordable way to explore the town without relying on a car.
Part of a wider overhaul
The new fares form part of a wider overhaul of Torrevieja’s public transport network.
The plans include more frequent buses and expanded routes serving La Mata, hospitals, schools and shopping centres. The council also plans to introduce a modern fleet made up largely of hybrid and electric vehicles.
