Wine lovers can take a journey through more than 3,000 years of wine history thanks to a new exhibition now on display at Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante.
The exhibition, titled 3.000 años de cultura del vino Alicante (3,000 Years of Alicante Wine Culture), has returned to the city after touring several municipalities across the province. Visitors can explore it in the castle’s parade ground until January 2027.
The exhibition tells the story of Alicante wine from ancient civilisations to the present day through the work of three well-known illustrators.
Wine history in Alicante
National Illustration Prize winner Miguel Calatayud joins Erre Gálvez and Paula Alenda to bring key moments in the region’s wine history to life. Their artwork traces the evolution of winemaking from its earliest beginnings to Alicante’s modern reputation as a wine and tourism destination.
Alicante Councillor for Tourism Ana Poquet attended the opening alongside Eladio Martín, manager of the Alicante Protected Designation of Origin (DOP Alicante) Regulatory Council, which organised the exhibition.
Representatives from Esatur, the company responsible for managing tourism activities at Santa Bárbara Castle, also attended the launch, together with local wine enthusiasts.
Weekly Alicante wine tastings
Visitors will also have the chance to sample local wines during the exhibition.
The castle will host weekly tastings showcasing wines produced under the DOP Alicante label, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the flavours behind one of the province’s oldest traditions.
The exhibition is free to visit and will remain at Santa Bárbara Castle until January 2027.
