Alicante has strengthened beach safety measures for the busy summer season by introducing 50,000 child identification wristbands and carrying out a major rescue simulation on Postiguet Beach.
The initiative aims to give families greater peace of mind while ensuring emergency teams remain ready to respond to incidents during the peak holiday period.
Child identification wristband system launched
Beach first aid stations now offer waterproof wristbands free of charge, allowing parents and guardians to write a child’s name and contact telephone number.
Manufacturers created the bands specifically for busy beach environments, making them difficult for children to remove themselves. The system helps lifeguards reunite families more quickly if a child becomes separated from their parents.
The city has also installed new information boards at beach first aid posts. The displays provide advice about local marine species, including jellyfish and weever fish, and explain what visitors should do if they suffer a sting.
Lifeguards complete rescue drill at Postiguet
As part of the summer safety campaign, emergency teams staged a rescue exercise at Postiguet Beach that simulated a person falling from the breakwater into the sea.
The operation brought together ten lifeguards, a jet ski, six Local Police officers and a drone, allowing emergency services to test coordination and response procedures.
Officials reported that emergency teams completed the full rescue operation in just five minutes and 30 seconds, from the initial alert to the casualty receiving assistance on shore.
Preparing for another busy summer
Alicante’s beaches welcome thousands of visitors every day during the summer months, making safety a key priority for local authorities.
According to municipal figures, lifeguard teams carried out more than 4,000 assistance interventions last year, with around 200 incidents requiring advanced medical treatment.
Tourism councillor Ana Poquet said the measures will improve both safety and information for beach users while helping Alicante maintain its reputation as one of the Costa Blanca’s safest and best-prepared seaside destinations.
