Skywatchers are in for a spectacular sight at the end of the month as the year’s Strawberry Moon rises above the horizon across Spain.

The full moon will reach its peak during the night of 29 June, appearing especially striking as it climbs into the summer sky. For observers in Spain, the moon will officially be full in the early hours of 30 June, at around 01:56 CEST.

What is the Strawberry Moon?

Despite its colourful name, the Strawberry Moon is not usually pink or red.

The name comes from Native American tribes who used June’s full moon to mark the short strawberry harvesting season. Over the centuries, other cultures have also given it names including the Rose Moon, Mead Moon and Hot Moon.

Why this year’s moon is special

The 2026 Strawberry Moon arrives just days after the summer solstice, meaning it will follow one of the lowest paths across the sky of any full moon this year. As a result, it will spend much of the evening close to the horizon, creating ideal conditions for dramatic moonrise views.

Observers may notice the moon appearing unusually large and glowing orange or golden as it rises. This effect is caused by a combination of atmospheric conditions and the well-known “moon illusion”, which makes the moon seem bigger when viewed near the horizon.

Best places to watch on the Costa Blanca

The best views are likely to be from open areas with clear views towards the south-east horizon.

Popular Costa Blanca locations such as beaches, seafront promenades, hilltop viewpoints and rural inland areas away from artificial lighting should provide excellent viewing opportunities if skies remain clear.

A treat for photography enthusiasts

The Strawberry Moon is also expected to be one of the most photogenic lunar events of the summer.

Astronomy experts recommend heading out around sunset on 29 June, when the moon first appears above the horizon. This is often when its colours are richest and when photographers can capture dramatic images with buildings, mountains or the Mediterranean coastline in the foreground.
