Here is a surprising fact you probably didn’t expect: the first known stapler was made in Spain.
That’s right! Not France, not England, not Germany. It came from the Basque Country in the 18th century.
This early stapler wasn’t the kind you’d find in an office supply shop today. It was a finely crafted, custom-made device, created as a gift for King Louis XV of France. Each staple was even engraved with the royal emblem of the king.
Back then, paper documents were still often tied or sealed with wax, so having a device that could fasten pages together neatly was quite advanced.
The modern stapler as we know it didn’t become common until much later.
