Alicante-Elche Airport has become the centre of an increasingly fierce battle between two of Europe’s biggest low-cost airlines.
Ryanair and Wizz Air are going head-to-head as they compete for new routes and passengers at one of Spain’s fastest-growing airports.
For travellers, the rivalry is bringing more destinations, more flights and potentially lower fares.
Wizz Air challenges Ryanair’s dominance
Ryanair remains the dominant airline at Alicante Airport.
The Irish carrier accounts for around a third of all passengers using the Costa Blanca gateway and continues to grow year after year.
However, Wizz Air has been expanding rapidly and is starting to challenge the established order.
The Hungarian airline has added several new routes and significantly increased passenger numbers over the past year.
As a result, Ryanair has responded quickly to several of Wizz Air’s latest announcements.
Bratislava route sparks competition
The latest airline battle began last year when Wizz Air announced a direct route between Alicante and Bratislava.
The Slovakian capital had previously lost its direct connection with the Costa Blanca.
Wizz Air moved first to restore the route.
However, Ryanair quickly announced its own Bratislava service and added two extra weekly frequencies.
Italy becomes the next battleground
The competition has since spread to Italy.
Italy is one of Alicante Airport’s fastest-growing markets and handled more than 600,000 passengers during 2025.
Ryanair currently operates nine Italian routes from Alicante.
Meanwhile, Wizz Air serves four destinations.
The first clash came over Venice Marco Polo Airport, the main gateway to Venice.
Wizz Air announced the route first.
Soon afterwards, Ryanair launched its own service with more weekly flights.
A similar situation followed with Catania in Sicily.
Until now, Alicante Airport had never offered direct flights to Catania.
Wizz Air announced the route for December.
Days later, Ryanair revealed its own service, which will begin earlier, at the end of October.
Passenger numbers continue to rise
Both airlines are benefiting from Alicante Airport’s continued growth.
According to Aena figures, Ryanair carried more than 2.55 million passengers between January and April 2026.
That represents an increase of around 250,000 passengers compared with the same period last year.
Wizz Air remains much smaller but is growing rapidly.
The airline handled almost 290,000 passengers during the first four months of the year.
More significantly, passenger numbers increased by almost 95,000 compared with 2025.
That makes Wizz Air one of the airport’s fastest-growing airlines.
Good news for Costa Blanca travellers
For passengers, the rivalry is proving beneficial.
More airlines competing on the same routes usually means greater choice and stronger competition on ticket prices.
The battle between Ryanair and Wizz Air is also helping to expand Alicante Airport’s route network.
Meanwhile, other airlines are taking advantage of opportunities created by the competition.
Vueling, for example, has expanded on several domestic routes from Alicante, including services to Santiago de Compostela and Santander.
The airline has also increased its presence on routes to North Africa, another rapidly growing market for the Costa Blanca.
More routes likely to follow
With Alicante Airport continuing to break passenger records, competition between airlines shows no signs of slowing down.
Both Ryanair and Wizz Air see strong growth potential on the Costa Blanca.
As a result, travellers can probably expect more route announcements and more competition in the months ahead.
