As Storm Benjamin sweeps across Spain the government has warned travellers that they should brace for unsettled weather.

Meteorologists are warning of strong winds, heavy rain, and high waves across much of southeastern and northern Spain. The weather could potentially affect weekend holiday plans and inbound flights.

However, there is some good news for those bound for the Costa Blanca, the region is forecast to avoid the storm’s harshest conditions.

What Spain expects from Storm Benjamin

The storm is expected to bring gusts exceeding 90 km/h, intense rainfall. Waves could reach five to seven metres along parts of the Mediterranean coastline. Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, and several northern coastal regions are under Yellow and Orange weather alerts. Holidaymakers are warned of possible disruptions to outdoor plans and beach visits

By contrast, the Costa Blanca, from Denia down to Pilar de la Horadada, should see milder conditions thanks to its more sheltered geography. While occasional showers and gusty winds may occur inland, coastal resorts such as Alicante, Torrevieja, and Calpe are expected to remain largely unaffected.

Spain’s travel and safety advice

Travellers flying into Alicante-Elche or Valencia airports should stay updated on flight information, as minor delays are possible. Local authorities also advise drivers to take extra care during heavier rain, particularly on open coastal routes.

Elsewhere, northern and central Spain are expected to feel the full force of Storm Benjamin. Regions including Galicia, the Pyrenees, and parts of Castile and León face heavier rainfall and stronger winds.
