Finding a parking space in Alicante could soon become a little easier. The council has announced plans to expand the orange parking zone into neighbourhoods near the centre, with more regulated spaces reserved for residents.
Even better news for locals. The orange zone will become free for residents, removing the current 30-cent fee.
New areas included in expansion
The expansion will extend beyond the current orange zones in Mercado Central and Ensanche-Diputación, reaching nearby neighbourhoods including:
- Benalúa Sur
- Princesa Mercedes
The extension to Princesa Mercedes is also linked to the future opening of the Ciudad de la Justicia Rafael Altamira, which is expected to increase parking demand in the area.
The changes will be introduced in the coming months, once the new ORA and tow truck service contract is awarded.
Alicante: +3,000 new parking spaces
The new parking plan will add around 3,017 regulated spaces across Alicante, including:
- 2,542 orange spaces for residents
- The remaining spaces in blue zones
Some of these new parking areas will also be located near the future Intermodal Station, helping manage traffic and parking demand as the city grows.
Free parking for residents
One of the biggest changes is that orange zone parking will become free for residents. Currently, drivers pay a small fee, but this charge will soon be removed.
According to municipal spokesperson Cristina Cutanda, the aim is to reduce parking pressure and make it easier for residents to park near their homes.
New rules for motorcycles and loading zones
The new contract will also introduce:
- Regulated motorcycle parking
- Updated loading and unloading zones
- Smart parking management through mobile apps
These measures aim to improve traffic flow and make parking more efficient across the city.
Long term plans
Looking ahead, Alicante also plans to reduce traffic in the city centre and coastal areas. The draft General Structural Plan includes proposals for 12 park-and-ride car parks at key access points to the city.
