Villajoyosa’s colourful old town is going to be even busier than usual this weekend, with more than 40 activities packed into three days.
La Vila Vella returns from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September, bringing live music, street art, food, workshops, guided visits and family activities to streets and squares around the historic centre.
There will also be some less conventional ways to see the town, including hot-air balloon rides and a zip line.
Friday night gets La Vila Vella started
Activities begin on Friday afternoon, ahead of the official opening in Plaza de
la Iglesia at 21:30.
From 18:00, visitors can join guided routes, visit the Passeig de Ronda and see a photography exhibition.
The zip line will operate in Plaza Castell, while balloon rides will take place in the Antoneta area.
Food trucks open in Plaza de San Cristóbal from 19:30, followed by music from DJ Natural Groove Brothers at 20:00. After the official opening, a video mapping show starts at 21:45.
A packed Saturday in the old town
Saturday brings the busiest programme, starting with guided routes, children’s cooking and drawing workshops, a tattoo area and the Pintura Ràpida (Quick Painting) competition from 10:00.
The Open House programme also begins on Saturday. It gives visitors free access to 14 buildings and spaces of architectural or historical interest between 10:30 and 13:30 on Saturday and Sunday.
Later in the day, entertainment spreads across the old town. The programme includes tango, street opera, magic and live street art. Valencia Gospel Choir will perform at the Costera la Mar walls, while video mapping will light up the seafront.
Sunday offers a slightly gentler finish, with more guided visits, Open House, the zip line and a vermouth area in Plaza de la Iglesia. Dossier performs there at 13:00.
Traffic and parking changes
If you are heading into Villajoyosa by car, there are several restrictions to keep in mind.
Drivers cannot enter or park throughout the historic centre until Sunday 13 September. Parking is also prohibited in Plaza de la Generalitat until 23:59 on Sunday.
Costera la Mar closes to traffic from 18:00 to 00:00 on Friday and again from 18:00 on Saturday until activities finish.
On Saturday, Avenida País Valencià will close from Calle Pizarro to the Amadorio river bridge from 21:30 for around an hour. There will also be temporary closures on the Playa Centro promenade between 23:00 and 23:30.
Local Police advise drivers to follow temporary signs.
If you arrive and are wondering what to see next, an information point in Plaza Castelar will provide full timings throughout the weekend.
