The San Antón neighbourhood in Villena is preparing for its traditional January celebrations, which run from 10 to 25 January.
The festival appeals to pet owners, lovers of local traditions, and anyone looking for something a little different.
Now in its 30th year, the celebrations have become a popular annual event that brings together tradition, food and music.
The main event takes place on 16 January at 17:00, when organisers light the traditional San Antón bonfire. The programme includes the well-known Hornazo Auction, where locals donate items that are auctioned to raise funds for the upkeep of the Hermitage of San Antón.
San Antón: Villena welcomes pets
Animal lovers should note 18 January. The Procession of San Antón begins at 12:30 in Plaza Plurifuncional and finishes in Plaza de Santiago, where pets and animals receive the traditional blessing.
The programme also includes a wide range of smaller events in the days leading up to the main celebrations. These include live music, choir performances, storytelling sessions, exhibitions, talks and concerts.
Food plays an important role in the festivities, with the return of the popular toña tasting. Local bakeries take part, and the public votes for the best version of this traditional sweet, usually enjoyed with hot chocolate. The winning bakery earns the honour of baking next year’s Gran Toñón.
