Drivers across the Costa Blanca are being warned to prepare for heavy traffic as the second and busiest phase of the Easter Traffic Operation gets underway.
The DGT operation will run until 24:00 on Monday 6 April, with 9.9 million long distance journeys expected across Spain. That is an increase of 2.03% compared to last year.
Busy roads expected across coastal areas
This period usually sees the highest traffic levels of the holiday. Large numbers of drivers leave major cities at the same time, heading to tourist destinations, second homes and coastal areas including the Costa Blanca.
There will also be heavy traffic during the Operación Retorno (return phase) as travellers head home later in the weekend.
Shorter journeys are also expected to increase, with many people travelling to nearby towns for processions, beach trips or short breaks.
These journeys often take place on secondary roads, which carry higher risks due to:
- Cyclists
- Motorcyclists
- Pedestrians
Because of this, police will increase checks for speed, alcohol, drugs and mobile phone use.
Reminder after recent road deaths
During the first phase of the Easter operation, 11 people lost their lives on Spanish roads. Authorities are urging drivers to take extra care, especially during short journeys and return trips.
Easter traffic forecast by day
Thursday 2 April
Traffic leaving major cities will increase from early morning, with possible delays until 15:00. In the afternoon, heavier traffic is expected on routes from Comunidad Valenciana and Cataluña, where Jueves Santo is not a public holiday.
Delays are expected on routes to coastal destinations.
Friday 3 April
Morning traffic will continue towards coastal areas and holiday destinations. Short journeys to nearby leisure areas are also expected. In the afternoon, traffic may increase around towns hosting religious events.
Saturday 4 April
Traffic may build in tourist areas, particularly along coastal roads. Some early return journeys may begin later in the day.
Sunday 5 April
The first major return phase begins. From mid morning, delays are expected on main routes heading towards large cities.
Traffic control measures will be in place throughout the day.
Monday 6 April
The final return phase will take place in Comunidad Valenciana, Cataluña, Navarra, País Vasco and La Rioja, where Monday remains a public holiday.
Heavy traffic is expected on main routes and access roads. The operation officially ends at 24:00.

Alternative routes to avoid congestion
