Are you the kind of driver who can’t resist pressing the pedal to the metal, or do you prefer pottering along in the slow lane behind a convoy of lorries?
Me? I’m somewhere in the middle. I like a bit of speed, but those loonies with a heavy right foot? They make me break out in a cold sweat. I just don’t get the thrill!
Which brings me to the latest “how on earth did they think that was a good idea?” story.
A motorist recently pushed the limits on the Autobahn west of Berlin. German police clocked them at over 320 kph (199 mph), which is a whopping 124 mph over the speed limit for that stretch.
Yes, the Autobahn is famous for its sections with no speed limits, but not all of it is a free-for-all. Parts of the motorway do have restrictions, and this particular stretch near Burg, on the A2, has a limit of 120 kph (about 75 mph).
The identity of the speed demon wasn’t revealed, but the consequences were a €900 fine, two points wiped from their licence, and a three-month driving ban, according to the Magdeburg police.
The record-breaking speed was caught by a roadside radar setup, cheekily called an “Enforcement Trailer,” during a routine check. Its display reportedly showed 321 kph, police said, which is officially a new record for that area.
Of course, driving too fast is obviously risky, but so is creeping along too slowly.
What do you think? Should motorways have speed limits?
