If you live in Torrevieja and your Spanish could use a little work, the Ayuntamiento is offering classes to improve it without having to jump straight into an advanced classroom.

Registration is now open for the Curso de español para residentes internacionales empadronados en Torrevieja. Applications remain open until Tuesday 15 September, with classes due to start in October.

The courses cover beginner and intermediate levels and focus on the Spanish people need for everyday life.

Who can sign up?

The courses are specifically for international residents who are registered on the padrón in Torrevieja and have regular legal residency status.

Academia Be Magic will provide the teaching, covering both spoken and written Spanish.

The emphasis is practical, whether that means dealing with everyday situations, communicating with other people or using Spanish at work.

These are not official qualification courses, so participants will not receive a recognised language certificate at the end.

Instead, Torrevieja Council says the aim is to give international residents greater confidence when using Spanish in their daily lives.

What documents do you need?

Applicants need to provide proof of identity and their registration on the Torrevieja padrón.

Depending on nationality and residency status, identification can include:

  • Passport
  • TIE
  • Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea (EU Citizen Registration Certificate)

Also needed:

  • Photographic identification issued by the applicant’s home country
  • Ccertificado de empadronamiento, confirming your registration as a Torrevieja resident
  • Completed course application form

How to apply

There are two ways to submit an application.

For an in-person application, visit the registration office at Torrevieja Town Hall in Plaza de la Constitución or the municipal registration office in La Mata, in Plaza de Gaspar Perelló.

Applications can also be completed online through the Torrevieja Council electronic office.

Once there, select Trámites and look for “ES02 – Solicitud de inscripción en Curso de español para residentes internacionales empadronados en Torrevieja”.

The deadline is Tuesday 15 September, and the courses begin in October.

Spanish for everyday life in Torrevieja

For a town with such a large international population, even a modest amount of Spanish can make everyday tasks much easier.

International Residents councillor Gitte Lund said the courses aim to help people communicate independently, use services and take a more active part in life in Torrevieja.

The focus on beginner and intermediate Spanish also means the course is aimed at people who still need practical language skills rather than those looking for an advanced academic qualification.

So, if ordering lunch is going well but a conversation at the town hall still sends your vocabulary into hiding, applications are open until 15 September.
