Alicante-Elche Airport looks set to stretch its wings even further. Talk of new international and long-haul connections are now on the horizon.

If all goes to plan, the next big destination could be Japan, the land of sushi and cherry blossoms.

The idea of a direct link between Alicante-Elche Airport and Tokyo has been floated around as Spain’s new Madrid–Tokyo connection gains ground.

And, the timing couldn’t be better. Attention is turning towards the upcoming Osaka World Expo. The Expo is a perfect backdrop for strengthening ties between the two countries.

Alicante-Elche Airport: Major leap forward

A direct flight from Alicante to Tokyo would be a major leap forward for the province. It wouldn’t just mean easier holidays for eager travellers, but also a serious boost to the local economy and cultural exchange.

Japan isn’t short of enthusiastic tourists with a taste for fine food, history, and scenic landscapes. The Costa Blanca with its beaches, gastronomy, and sunshine, fits the bill nicely.

The potential benefits go beyond tourism, too. A steady flow of business travellers could open new doors for companies across the region, from tech and innovation to agriculture, education, and food exports.

And let’s not forget the Costa Blanca’s enviable location. It has quick links to Valencia, Barcelona, Andalusia, and the north of Spain. Alicante could easily become an alternative to Madrid as an entry point for Japanese visitors keen to explore Spain.

Visits and cultural exchanges

Recent visits and cultural exchanges have already laid some groundwork.

Benidorm’s mayor, Toni Pérez, recently travelled to Japan to meet with the Japan Travel Bureau sparking discussions about possible future flights.

Benidorm wasn’t just there for the sushi! It was one of only three European cities invited to the Japan Expo to show off its approach to sustainable and smart tourism.

If these plans (and planes) take off  Alicante could soon be saying konnichiwa to a whole new world of opportunity.
