If you are heading out and about in Elche this Christmas, you can give the car a well earned rest. The city will offer free bus services on 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 December.

There will also be a special free public transport service from 3 to 5 January, allowing residents to travel to the Royal Camp at Torre Vaillo.

The initiative aims to encourage people to use public transport during a time of year when traffic levels rise sharply. By doing so, the council hopes to reduce congestion in the city centre, cut carbon emissions, and make it easier to reach shopping and leisure areas without the stress of parking.

The idea seems to work. Last year, during the free bus period from 21 to 24 December, more than 111,000 passengers used the urban bus network.

Council spokesperson Inma Mora highlighted that sustainable mobility and promoting public transport are key priorities for the current municipal government. She explained that the measure is designed not only to support local shopping during the Christmas period, but also to help residents become more familiar with using buses, ideally encouraging them to choose public transport throughout the year.

For shoppers, families, and anyone keen to avoid festive traffic jams, it is a simple offer. Step on the bus, enjoy the ride, and arrive without spending ten minutes looking for a parking space.
