The Petrer Crochet Gallery at the Tourist Office has just unveiled its latest addition.
The newest arrival is a fabulous wool reinterpretation of Salvador Dalí’s painting Woman at the Window.
This intricate work is the result of a collaborative effort by 40 crocheters from across Spain and abroad. Contributors come from Petrer, Valencia, Toledo, Murcia, Madrid, and Ibiza and even as far afield as Ireland.
Tourism Councillor David Morcillo explained that this marks the 21st piece in the town’s one-of-a-kind gallery. “Thanks to the crocheters, we have transformed an idea into wool,” he said proudly. “The final piece measures 2.5 metres by 1.7 metres, made up of 1,200 individual 5×5 cm squares and a remarkable 18.5 kilometres of wool.”
The Petrer Crochet Gallery: More than a Tourist Office
Morcillo highlighted how the gallery has turned the Tourist Office itself into a local attraction. “In most towns, a tourist office is simply a place to ask for information,” he said. “Here, it’s become a destination in its own right, visitors come specifically to see these crochet masterpieces.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the crocheters: “The concept is ours, but the craftsmanship is entirely theirs.”
Tourism technician Sara Sánchez shared details about the technique: “As with our previous piece, Las Meninas, we used just eleven shades of blue, which helps the work maintain its sense of depth and detail.” She added that the artwork has been cleverly installed where a window once stood in the building, blending with the space and giving the impression that the scene opens out into the room.
Since its launch almost six years ago with a crochet version of Picasso’s Guernica, Petrer’s Crochet Gallery has paid homage to a range of great artists, including Van Gogh, Klimt, Leonardo da Vinci, Munch, Michelangelo, Joan Miró, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Mondrian, and Sorolla.
Petrer’s Tourist Office is located at Plaça de Baix, 10, 03610 Petrer, and open daily from 10:00 until 14:00.
