If you enjoy big views and a bit of history, Santa Bárbara Castle in Alicante is well worth a visit.
The castle sits 166 metres above sea level on Mount Benacantil and is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. From the top, there are wide views across Alicante, the bay and the coastline, ideal for photos or a quiet wander with the sea breeze.
A castle with many layers
Santa Bárbara Castle has grown over centuries. At the very top is La Torreta, the oldest part, dating back to the 14th century. This area includes the Keep and the earliest remains of the fortress.
Below that is the 16th century level, where you will find the Felipe II Hall, the Guard Room, the Parade Ground and the Queen’s Bastion. The lowest section is the 18th century Revellín del Bon Repós, which completes the layout of the castle as it stands today.
