Britain has given the world many things: Shakespeare, the Beatles, and a tendency to deep-fry anything that stays still long enough.
From the humble chip to the infamous Mars bar, the national fryer knows no bounds. But now, one chippy in Telford, just north of Birmingham, has gone where even Heston Blumenthal might fear to tread: they have battered poor Cuthbert the Caterpillar.
Bad enough that poor old Cuthbert the Caterpillar is neglected to be invited to Colin the Caterpillar’s BIG 35, now he is subjected to being deep-fried. No doubt, Marks & Spencer will be delighted with the news though.
I love a trip to the chip shop as much as the next person, but I go for fish and chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, all proper savoury stuff. I don’t go there for pudding.
In a video they posted on social media, an employee proudly shows off poor Cuthbert before dunking the entire cake into batter. Once fully coated, Cuthbert is lowered into the fryer. A few minutes later, out comes a golden, crispy lump that looks suspiciously like an oversized battered fish.
They filmed the cake from every angle, before cutting into the middle. Inside, the chocolate cake was still soft and moist, with the frosting slightly melted, all encased in savoury batter.

The verdict? After tasting, the chef proudly announced that Cutherbert tasted “so good” and gave the dish a score of 12 out of 10.
So, the question is, would you tuck in proudly, or slowly nibble through Cuthbert and apologise to Mary Berry before every bite?
