Travel back to the time of the Moors, and you will find a legend centred around the tourist cave near Benidoleig on the Costa Blanca.

While Alicante is known for its many caves, this one stands out for its beauty and mystery, carefully preserved so visitors can fully appreciate it.

Situated about 1,000 metres from Benidoleig, a village close to Denia, local tradition tells of a Moorish king named Ali Moho who, along with his 150 wives and their precious jewels, sought refuge within this cave to escape the feared sword of El Cid Campeador.

Trapped within the cave, Ali Moho and his harem either chose to take their own lives during the Christian siege or perished from starvation after a gallery collapsed, sealing them inside.

When the cave was eventually discovered, 150 skulls were found arranged in a circle, with two more resting in a boat on an inland lake, giving rise to the haunting tale of the Cave of Skulls.
